Luther-Index

1990 - 2009

Junger Luther

The writings of Martin Luther, which are collected in 70 volumes of the “Weimar Edition”, represent the most important work by a German author before Goethe in terms of scope and weight. Their national and international impact extends far beyond the history of the church and theology into general cultural and intellectual history. No writer before or after Luther has had a comparable influence on the development of the German language. However, his work is difficult to survey due to its scope and diversity. The indexes make the wealth of texts available accessible to theologians as well as to philologists, philosophers, historians, art historians, legal historians, social historians, literary historians and historians of science from all disciplines, but not least also to interested parties from the church, politics, culture and other areas of public life.

After the index of places (1986) and the index of persons (1987), the Latin (1990-1999) and the German subject index (2001-2009) were published in five volumes each.

With the delivery of the last index volume in 2009, the Weimar Luther Edition (external link), which was begun in 1883, was also completed. 126 years after the publication of the first volume, what is probably the most comprehensive written legacy of a German author is now available in a critical complete edition.
