Editionstools für eine Digitale Epigraphik (EDEp - Edition Tools for Digital Epigraphy) is a DFG funded project and will explore the possibilities and needs of digital epigraphy and develop incentives and excellent tools for its application. EDEp will then use these tools in a research project on the historical region of Gallia Belgica. The results will contribute significantly to the current research on Roman epigraphy in Germany. This research will be conducted within the framework of Ephemeris Epigraphica Electronica (EEE), an open access publication tool launched as part of the EDEp project. EEE will make editions of inscriptions and research data available for digital and analogue re-use by the scientific community.
Overall, EDEp will advance the research on Gallia Belgica and on regions of the Roman Empire for which more information on the epigraphic landscape is already available in few other editions. Moreover, EDEp will promote publishing on ancient epigraphy in the XML/TEI format in four ways:
- by establishing a publication tool as best practice example for digital epigraphic editions, EEE = Ephemeris Epigraphica Electronica,
- by developing a DTS tool that facilitates using and referencing inscriptions digitally,
- by providing a) a ‘cookbook’ on the digital editing process, including online documentation, on GitHub, and b) critical analyses of tools and workflows to optimise epigraphic open access publications and editions,
- by presenting the research results in a way that highlights the additional benefits of the digital format, by promoting the digital tools in the scientific community and by publishing the results in online journals and on GitHub.
Data and software solutions will be made accessible for further use in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reuseable) already during the course of the project. The integration of the EDEp output into other epigraphic projects guarantees that necessary adaptations and optional improvements can be made relatively easily after the end of the funding, albeit not entirely without further expenses. The research on Gallia Belgica and the other inscription editions listed in the project application as well as the study of these inscriptions will fill significant gaps in the work on Roman source material.
