The Academy has been awarding the State Research Prize together with the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts since 1989.
This prize honours the scientific achievements of outstanding researchers from a wide range of disciplines. Since 1999, the State Research Prize (external link) has been divided into two research areas. One prize is awarded for outstanding basic research, the other for exceptional applied research. Previous winners have come from a wide variety of fields - from biology to finance, from palaeoanthropology to research into artificial intelligence.
With prize money totalling 200,000 euros, the State Research Prize is the most highly endowed prize of any state in Germany. The research areas are each worth 100,000 euros.
