The State Research Prize was awarded almost every year until 2011. This was followed by a reorganisation, as a result of which the prize could only be awarded again in 2014. Since then, the State Research Prize has been awarded annually, alternating with the State Teaching Prize (external link).
Potential candidates are nominated by the state's scientific institutions. An interdisciplinary jury consisting of renowned scientists and the presidents of the Max Planck Society and the German Research Foundation decides on the award. The Academy chairs the jury.
The prize can be awarded to several people at the same time.
