Sabine Dabringhaus studied sinology, history and political science in Freiburg and Munich. She completed her doctorate at the Institute of Qing History at the Chinese People's University in Beijing from 1987 to 1990. In 2003 she habilitated at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich and subsequently taught
as a junior professor and since 2009 as a professor for East Asian History (external link) at the Albert
Ludwigs University of Freiburg.

She is a board member of the Scientific Society of the University of Freiburg and chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Research Centre for Chinese Studies in Beijing as well as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Walter Benjamin Kolleg at the University of Bern. She is also co-editor of the Historische Zeitschrift (HZ).

Her research interests include the history of the late imperial empire in China in the context of comparative imperial history, nationalism in 20th century China, history of Chinese humanities, long-term political developments in the Republic of China (1912-1949), the cultural basis of Chinese modernity, history of Central Asia (Tibet, Mongolia) and environmental history of China.

She has been secretary of the Philosophical-Historical Class since October 2022.
