1959 - 2003

The research center had the task of making the holdings of antique originals of art and handicrafts in the Museum of Antiquities of the Archaeological Institute of the University of Heidelberg accessible to researchers through scientific catalogs. Founded in 1848, the Collection of Classical Antiquities today has one of the largest archaeological teaching collections at German universities.
The most important material complexes comprised works from the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean region, primarily Greece and Italy: painted ceramics; statuettes, reliefs and architectural elements made of terracotta and stone; figures, vessels and utensils made of bronze; fragments of wall paintings; clay lamps; coins.
