Edition of the Reuchlin-Correspondence

1994 - 2007

Final page of Reuchlin's German translation of Cicero's Tusculan Disputations | University Library Heidelberg: Cod. Pal. germ. 482.

The task of the research center, which was established in Pforzheim from 1994 to 2007, was the critical and annotated edition of Reuchlin's correspondence. Johannes Reuchlin (1455-1522), who was born in Pforzheim, was one of the founders of early modern Greek and Hebrew studies. As a lawyer and diplomat, he held influential political positions in the Duchy of Württemberg. His courageous advocacy for Jewish literature, which was threatened with annihilation, made him a leading figure in the enlightened struggle against all kinds of “dark men”. The research center was jointly supported by the academy and the city of Pforzheim.
