In 2016, the Schmeil Foundation (external link) established the Otto Schmeil Prize to promote young scientists in biological and medical research.
It is awarded every two years by the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and is endowed with 15,000 euros.

Who qualifies for nomination?
The prize is awarded to a young researcher with existing qualifications for outstanding scientific work. The proposed work should have been published or submitted for publication in the previous two years.
Nominees for the award should not be older than 40 years. If several candidates are equally involved, the prize can be awarded to them in equal parts.
Who may nominate?
- all members of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Class of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities
- heads of all scientific institutions of the universities in Baden-Württemberg (rectorates, deaneries, managing directors, institute directors)
- heads of all non-university research institutions in Baden-Württemberg (managing directors)
- self-nominations are not permitted
