The award was established by the City of Heidelberg (external link) and Heidelberg University (external link) in 1983 to mark the 100th birthday of the Heidelberg philosopher Karl Jaspers. The Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities has contributed to the prize as a sponsor since 2013.
