Année Philologique

1972 - 2012

Launched in 1924, the “Année Philologique” is the only complete international scholarly bibliography for the entire field of ancient studies, published annually until 2012. It covers the fields of literature (pagan and early Christian), linguistics, textual history, papyrology, archaeology, epigraphy, history (including economic, social and mental history), religious history, legal history, philosophy and the history of the natural sciences. In terms of time, it covers the three millennia from around 2000 BC (Mycenae, Crete) to around 800 AD (literature of the early Middle Ages).

The advantage of the bibliography is that it not only includes every new book published worldwide that is relevant to the subject and every review of it for five years, but in particular all articles excerpted from over 1000 journals and numerous articles published in collective publications are provided with a summary.

The company was spread across various offices: The head office was located in Paris; there were branch offices in the U.S.A. (since 1965, currently in Cincinnati/Ohio), in Heidelberg (since 1972), in Lausanne (since 1977), in Genoa (since 1995), in Granada (since 2000) and in Victoria/Canada (since 2005). The Heidelberg branch handles the literature published in Germany and Austria, which accounts for around 20% of the total volume.

The “Année Philologique” was published once a year in book form. There is also an internet database (external link) in which all volumes are accessible to subscribers; numerous academic libraries grant their users free access to this internet database, such as the Heidelberg University Library at http://www.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/helios/. Since 2009, the data records of the current editorial year have also been made available as “interim records” in this Internet database.

The branch has been based at the LMU Munich (external link) since 2013.
